Inside the shop

Success in retail stores this year will come from the ability to merchandise stock in a consistent and eye-catching way to lure customers around your store to ultimately increase sales.

If you are not familiar with the term ‘merchandising’, Oxford Dictionary states it as:
“The activity of promoting the sale of goods, especially by their presentation in retail outlets”[1].

Successful merchandising is highly influenced by trending colours and themes which means it is a constantly evolving strategy.

Top tips for merchandising in 2019 include:

Tip One – In-store signage

Signage in shops is not a new idea, but how the message is displayed constantly changes to attract both new and existing customers. For example, the most popular ‘SALE’ sign has evolved from being the traditional red and white sign to different colours, styles, fonts and to new emerging LED signs.

Shops are also using signage to promote different styles and ways to wear things near certain clothing racks to get customers thinking about how it would suit them and to encourage customers to take the next step.

Tip Two – Call to action

A low cost idea to suggest to customers suggesting they should try something on or consider it as a gift for someone near merchandised stock is subtle way to increase sales.

This could be done using the traditional ticket frame or the latest trending reflex graphics holders.

Tip Three – Creating an experience

The most successful way to retain customers is to create an experience in your store. Whilst large stores in the US are opening small coffee stands within their stores, small retailers cannot physically afford to do this yet there are other cost-effective ways to do this.

Create a unique experience in your store with a shop display that customers will remember you by, talk to their friends about or encourages people to take photos off and share on social media. Consider full wall murals with greenery hanging from the roof and a retro bicycle in the corner to create an ultimate garden display? How about offering an in-store personal stylist service when launching new season stock? Barbers are offering free WIFI or game stations whilst their clients are waiting.

Any ideas to help create an experience will be a win-win for you.

Tip Four – Creating pop-up stores within stores

Pop-up stores within existing stores are a successful way to boost store sales with end of season sales or new season product launches. Christmas pop-up stores within large department stores are great examples of this idea. If space is an issue, consider a small pop-up stall in a local shopping centre to run a sale or product launch.

Tip 5 -The simple the better approach

Merchandisers are now focusing more on the “Less is more” method where less amounts of items are displayed but they have space and ability to create bold, eye-catching displays.

This method also applies to shop processes, store layouts or shop fittings direct. Considering upgrading Shopfittings? Check out Unislot to create stylish and functional store displays.
